I had booked a room for two nights, but my flight was cancelled, preventing me from arriving on schedule. I informed the hotel that I would only require the room for one night. They replied that I would still be charged for both nights, but that my room would remain available should I arrive early. I accepted those terms, as stated in the fine print, and continued my travel. However, upon arrival, I was informed at the reception that my room was not available, yet I was still charged for both nights.

I’ve stayed at Van der Valk Hotel Mons several times and always had a good experience. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the noise level is impressively low, no disturbances at all.

The breakfast is excellent, with fresh juice, great bread, and an egg station where you can order omelets and more, though it’s a bit pricey.

The fitness room is too small, and during my last stay both treadmills were out of order. On the positive side, the wellness area is very nice and perfect after a long day of travel or work.

The location is excellent, especially with the new train station now open, close to public transport, a shopping center, and several restaurants. The hotel bar is cozy and serves good drinks, though prices are on the higher side.

If you like sleeping next to a fair that stays until 12-1 AM (the lady at the desk said it would finish at 10 PM), where the attractions with loud Disco music are facing you, and your room is facing that. So loud that you feel the base vibrating in your bed. Then this is the place for you. The fair stays until 12 December, so good luck!

The most important thing a hotel must do is give you a clean and comfortable room that is quiet to sleep in. If a hotel can't even meet those basic requirements then no amenities can help it. Even it the noise is coming from outside the hotel.

As a bonus we also had to clean and make up our own breakfast table as nothing was prepared, and parking here is incredibly scarce.

The "Spa" is a single swimming pool that is mostly occupied by events that non-hotel guests attend. And the sauna (are there even multiple?) is accessible with a separate payment.

I have stayed in numerous Van der Valk's, mostly really good. But this one is something else.
