Nice excavation of old Roman villa from 1st century, interpretive boards mostly in French. Only foundation walls in evidence but rooms & layout clearly identified. Long farm track to large car park but visitor centre temporarily closed. Free, no facilities.

The gallo-roman Villa of Mageroy was in use from the middle of the 1st century until the 4th century. It was built in a swampy cavity, near a water stream, which required solid foundations and a considerable amount of work for the leveling of the land. The villa is divided into two parts: the pars urbana includes the main building as well as a residential courtyard; the pars rustica (agricultural courtyard) is made up of four annex buildings, a large basin and three lime kilns. This property was surrounded by a wall forming a rectangle nearly 200 m long and about 145 m wide, which covered an area of 3 ha. Germanic raids at the end of the 3rd century did not spare Mageroy: its hid a treasure of 105 silver antonioani found in the cellar. The villa was burnt down after 262 AD and abandoned.
