24th August 1914 my Great great grandfather was in this battle while the allied forces retreated his Regiment the Cheshires held the line and faced an overwhelming force of 12.000 German's they fought for 4 hours and where then ordered to surrender he was taken POW and released in Sept1919 this probably saved his life. A very moving place to visit with a history for our family. We took his medals back to the location he won them...
It was a poor weather day but this didn't detract from being here... in his memory.
A simple memorial we visited 3 years ago tracking the battles of the 4th Irish Dragoon Guards who charged to cover the retreat of the BEF. As with the Cheshire’s only 200 of the 650 souls were present at the roll call. Although no mention is made of them at the memorial?
Whilst searching for any grave of the missing 450, none was discovered.
